Bitcoin-Backed Mortgages Surge as Homeownership Crisis Deepens, Experts Say

Las Vegas, NV — A growing number of homebuyers are turning to Bitcoin-backed mortgages to bypass traditional lending hurdles, industry leaders revealed Wednesday at the Bitcoin 2026 conference. The panel, titled “From HODL to Home: Bitcoin-Backed Loans Meet Mortgages,” highlighted how holding Bitcoin as collateral can unlock immediate access to real estate without selling the asset.

“Bitcoin found me and smacked me up the head,” said CJ Konstantinos, founder of Peoples Reserve. He recounted paying 100 Bitcoin for a house in 2019—a property now worth $500,000 while the same Bitcoin has appreciated to $7.6 million. “I can’t sell that house for anywhere near the Bitcoin’s current value,” he added. Konstantinos now advocates for structured lending products that allow holders to borrow against their Bitcoin instead of spending it.

Hunter Albright, chief revenue officer at SALT Lending, supported the urgency. “It’s become harder to buy a first home than at any point in modern history,” he said. “First-time U.S. homebuyers are now often over 40. That’s proof traditional mortgage finance is failing a huge segment of the population.”

Background

Bitcoin-backed lending is not new—SALT Lending has operated for nearly a decade—but its application to mortgages is accelerating. The panel identified four core use cases: access for borrowers needing a bridge into conventional finance; advantage for closing loans within 24 hours; agility to buy a new home before selling an existing one; and acceleration to build wealth over time using Bitcoin-collateralized credit.

Konstantinos compared Bitcoin to traditional collateral like gold and U.S. Treasuries. “Gold works, but it’s physical and hard to move. Treasuries are strong but carry inflation risk tied to expanding supply,” he said. “Bitcoin is finite, settles on chain, and can move billions across the world without friction.” He criticized central bank policies: “You have a small group of men deciding what the price of money is.”

What This Means

Bitcoin-backed mortgages offer a potential solution for first-time buyers priced out of the market by high interest rates and strict lending criteria. Holders can keep their Bitcoin exposure while securing a loan for a home, rather than triggering a taxable sale. However, the loans carry risks: if Bitcoin’s price drops sharply, borrowers may face margin calls or liquidation.

“This isn’t reckless—it’s disciplined financial engineering,” Albright said. “For a growing number of holders, leveraging Bitcoin is the only way to enter the housing market.” The panel called on regulators to provide clearer guidelines, enabling broader adoption of these products.

As the housing crisis deepens, Bitcoin-backed mortgages could unlock homeownership for a generation that has accumulated wealth in digital assets but lacked the income or credit history to secure a traditional mortgage. The conference marked a pivotal moment, with executives projecting a tenfold increase in such loans within three years.
