Amazon Web Services (AWS) celebrated its 20th anniversary today, marking two decades of transforming cloud computing. The company now offers over 240 comprehensive services and launches thousands of new features annually for millions of customers worldwide.
Since its inception, AWS has published more than 4,700 blog posts, more than double the number since the 10th anniversary milestone. This growth reflects the platform's relentless pace of innovation and its central role in the digital economy.
"When looking into the future, you need to be able to distinguish between flashy distractions and genuine trends, while remaining flexible enough to pivot if yesterday's niche becomes today's mainstream technology," said Jeff Barr, AWS Vice President and Chief Evangelist. This principle has guided AWS's approach to innovation, starting with customer needs.
The journey began in 2006 with the launch of Amazon S3 and EC2. In 2009, AWS added Relational Database Service and Virtual Private Cloud, followed by DynamoDB and Redshift in 2012, WorkSpaces and Kinesis in 2013, Lambda in 2014, and AWS IoT in 2015.
One pivotal moment came in 2006 when Jeff Barr visited Seoul for a conference. A short meeting with him inspired an AWS customer to build API-based services, later using AWS for large-scale research. "He became my role model as a blogger, and I began building API-based services in my company," the customer recalled.

Key milestones include the launch of Amazon Elastic Container Service in 2014, followed by Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service and AWS Fargate in 2017. These services enabled easier deployment of containers across managed clusters, reducing operational complexity.
The technology landscape has transformed dramatically, with deep learning, generative AI, and agentic AI emerging as breakthroughs. AWS has consistently stayed at the forefront, helping customers reimagine solutions for critical challenges.
